The nation’s top infectious disease expert spoke with School of Medicine Dean Lloyd Minor about the challenges posed by COVID-19, the hope for emerging vaccines and treatments, and what’s still unknown about the virus.
The COVID-19 pandemic is an infectious disease scientist’s “worst nightmare,” said Anthony Fauci, MD, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, during a conversation with School of Medicine Dean Lloyd Minor, MD, on July 13.
“Of all the emerging infections that I’ve had to deal with in the 36 years that I’ve been the director of the institute — starting off from HIV in the early ’80s with Ebola and Zika, and anthrax attacks — this is clearly the most challenging,” said Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force.
